Bernie Arbour

Sergeant Bernie Arbour was the director of Hamilton youth baseball from 1948 to his death in 1967. He was a much-beloved Coach and mentor to young people in hockey and baseball throughout Hamilton. He was able to convince then Chief Len Lawrence to assign him full-time to role of leader to the Hamilton Police Amateur Athletic Association (HPAAA). Using that organization as a touchstone towards a larger organization throughout the city, he and his many volunteers were able to assist many children to learn and engage in sports. He was also able to convince the Hamilton Police Services Board to donate any money realized each year through their sale of found or recovered property in the Annual Police Auction, to the HPAAA.

According to Wikipedia the Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium on Upper Kenilworth Avenue is named after him as a memorial to all the goodness he brought into the City.

In 1967 he was given the award of Citizen of the Year by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and Mayor Vic Copps.  Sadly he died the following year.
