Ontario Medal of Police Bravery

On July 28, 2001, while off duty, Officer Loris Pilot was driving with his two children on Highway 403 near the Aberdeen exit where he witnessed a vehicle lose control and roll several times before coming to rest on the driver side. The lone occupant of the vehicle had his arm pinned underneath and was unable to get himself out.

Officer pilot took quick action, and with the help of a passing female motorist is able to free the man before flames totally engulfed the vehicle.  At the time, the driver’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening.  However, he succumbed to his injuries days later.

For his heroic actions that day officer pilot was awarded the Ontario medal for police bravery. He was among eight police officers to receive the honour in 2001 introduced in 1975, the Ontario medal for police bravery recognizes men and women who have risked their personal safety in efforts to rescue others. There have been 150 recipients of the police bravery metal.
